Cheer ends when the last basketball game is played in late January/early February.

Cross-Country

The coach usually schedules some summer run times for any student interested in

potentially trying out for cross-country. These dates will be announced in advance and on our website. Once school starts, regular practices will be set after-school. If a student wishes to be on the team he or she needs to commit to attending those. We look to keep as many runners as possible, however, cuts can be made. Some cross-country meets limit the number of runners allowed, and the coach uses run times and other factors to determine who will attend the meet/events. CLUBS and OTHER EXTRACURRICULARS

Art Club

The Art Club at Carbondale Middle School is open to all students, no matter their skill level or experience with art. Students have the opportunity to explore different materials and create projects based on their own ideas and interests while working on artwork and decorations for school events and activities throughout the year. Art Club focuses on creativity, collaboration, and having fun in a welcoming environment. The club begins in September and meets after school twice a month, typically every other week, from 3:00–4:00 p.m. There is no formal sign-up process — students who are interested can simply show up to meetings and join in.

Band and Jazz Band

Begins in early August and is a year long commitment. The band program at CMS is a fully graded, credited class (grade counts as a fine arts credit according to the Illinois State Board of Education) that is offered every day. Also, students will receive one 20-minute sectional lesson per week. Carbondale Middle School offers many musical opportunities that other schools in the area do not provide such as private/group lessons, marching band, pep band, chamber music, and our formal concert band. Jazz Band is a separate class that is generally auditioned, but we encourage anyone who is interested to sign up for the class. Instruments in jazz band are saxophones, trumpets, trombones, bass guitar, piano, electric guitar, drum set and percussion. Additional Information

Chorus

Choir is a performance-based music class where students develop vocal technique, musicianship, confidence, teamwork, and stage presence through singing a variety of music styles. Throughout the year, students work together to prepare quality performances while learning important musical skills such as harmony, rhythm, expression, and sight-reading. Choir students participate in two main concerts each year along with several additional performances including, but not limited to, holiday caroling, community events, sporting events, and television appearances. The choir program encourages creativity, responsibility, collaboration, and pride in representing our school and community. Choir is a team-based performance group, regular participation, cooperation, and responsibility are important for the success of the entire ensemble. Students may also be expected to keep passing grades and remain eligible according to school activity policies.

If you are interested in joining choir please contact our choral director Stephanie Reece at [email protected] to get more information on how to register.

Makernauts

Makernauts is a S.T.E.A.M. club for exceptional thinkers. We explore engineering, design thinking, and creativity. We build things, learn to 3D print, and explore electronics, robotics, optics, strategy and more. Whether you’re an artist, a game designer, engineer, programmer or tinkerer, this club’s for you. We meet after school once a week (in two cohorts, so you have a choice about which evening you participate), on the CMS campus and at the SIU imagination lab, and work with honors students from across SIU’s curriculum as mentors and playmates. We offer two cohorts a year, one beginning a couple weeks into the school year, the second a couple weeks after we return to school in January. There are no fees, and all supplies are provided. Students with IEPs and 504s are encouraged to apply (the program has proven to be an especially powerful academic intervention), but ALL middle school students are welcome! You can pick up applications in the front office, or at room 210 from Mr. Travis Clayton. Come make stuff!

Million Words Club

CMS Million Words Club was created to get kids excited about reading. Students read and log books into a website. Once the book is approved by club sponsors,  the website tracks how many words the students have read. At a million words, students are in the club!  We have parties and prizes for those who read more than 1,000,000 words.  We hope you participate with us this year.  For those interested, send an email to [email protected] to get a username and password to the reading log website.

Scholar Bowl

In Scholar Bowl, participants attempt to quickly and accurately answer trivia questions from all academic areas of study. It is similar to Jeopardy with a team concept. Tryouts are held on the third Monday in September, and will be announced in advance and on our website. If there is a schedule conflict due to the student being in another sport we will make accommodations. The team is selected based on an administered academic test, buzzer test, grades, teacher recommendations, and attendance. Practices are mandatory every Monday. If a conflict arises contact needs to be made to coaches by parents. The season begins in late October and lasts until the end of February. Matches are every Wednesday during the school day and parents are invited to attend. There is a limit to the number of students on the team and cuts are made.

Wrestling Club

The Carbondale Wrestling Club is an introduction to wrestling for 6th–8th grade students at Carbondale Middle School. Athletes will learn the basic rules of the sport, along with fundamental wrestling techniques. Experience level, gender, and weight, do not matter; all CMS 6th–8th graders are welcome to participate. No cost necessary!

This starts Mid-September and ends the last week of October. Practices would be every Tuesday and Thursday. Must have a physical on file before you start.
