Parent Letter on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

ALERT: Parents, community members: Please see the following letter that District #95 Supt. Daniel L. Booth shared with the community on today, Thursday, 12 March 2020. Thursday, 12 March 2020

Dear District #95 Families:

This past week, there has been a great deal of news published about the Coronavirus (COVID-19), a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and can spread from person to person.  Since COVID-19 was first reported in the United States, there have been 25 cases confirmed in Illinois.

We want to reiterate that at Carbondale Elementary School District #95, we are committed to the safety of our students and staff.  While there have been no reported incidences of this virus in our schools, we are monitoring the news about COVID-19 and working with our local health officials to keep our schools safe. We want to share that we are taking precautions to prevent the introduction and spread of viruses and other germs and are cleaning off high-contact areas, such as paper towel dispensers, light switches, doorknobs, toilet flush handles, keyboards and desks.  The status of this situation is extremely fluid, and we are monitoring the progress of this matter thoroughly and consistently.

We encourage parents and students to continue following the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention promoted safeguards, such as washing hands with soap for at least 20 seconds; covering coughs and sneezes and properly disposing of tissues; and avoiding others who are sick and staying home, if ill, among other suggestions.

We are in constant contact with Illinois state and local public health officials to discuss how to move forward as we are scheduled to come back from spring break next week. As for the option of closing schools, we have not received any notification that there have been exposures or confirmed cases in our attendance boundaries. Therefore, there is currently no plan to shut down any of our buildings. This direction could change pending more information and direction from governmental agencies. It’s important to note that we have only used one of our five emergency days this year, so we do have viable options in the event that we need to close school. Parents can help us in the event of a closing by working on alternative child care plans now.

Call your healthcare professional if you feel sick with fever or cough; have difficulty breathing; have been in close contact with a person known to have Coronavirus; or have recently travelled — nationally or internationally — from an area with the ongoing spread of Coronavirus.  Moving forward, health authorities may issue new guidance, and we will keep you updated on any impact it may have on our schools.

Sincerely, Daniel L. Booth Superintendent of Schools Carbondale Elementary School District #95
